The first glimpse of autumn in the North Carolina Mountains was early September. The leaves on select trees turned red, while others were still summer green.

There were only a few select trees here and there that slowly began to show color. Just when all indications of a perfect autumn were a certainty, the rains began; it seemed we were doomed to one of those unusual autumns when the leaves would be dull, lifeless and fall with the rains.

Lo and behold, a few days ago the weather changed into beautiful warm and sunny days with clear cool nights bringing another beautiful autumn to Ashe County.

We invite you to come to Ashe County. It is the perfect time of the year to enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. We would be remiss if we did not suggest a back roads tour of the county. The tour will take you through rural areas with acres and acres of Christmas tree farms, lovely displays of barn quilts painted on rural barns throughout Ashe County, small communities with country stores and friendly people. In Todd, you will find North Carolina’s oldest general store still in operation today. Discover the New River in the most unexpected places or take the Blue Ridge Parkway for miles of untold beauty of autumn.

After you’ve spent the morning touring Ashe County, drive into the small mountain town of West Jefferson. Enjoy a delicious meal at one of the great restaurants.
