Works of Art

A fresco painting is one of the most challenging and impressive forms of art. To make a true fresco mural, wet plaster is applied to a large surface on a wall, and colored mineral pigments are painted onto the plaster while the plaster is still wet. Painting while still wet allows the pigments to soak and penetrate the plaster, making light reflect differently and the image to appear almost three-dimensional. A large amount of skill and careful planning is required to create such unique pieces of art. There are multiple authentic frescos in Glendale Springs that are sure to delight visitors.

One of the most impressive frescos depicts The Last Supper. It is on the wall behind the altar in Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Glendale Springs. North Carolina native Benjamin F. Long painted this incredible piece of art in 1980. Visitors to the church can enjoy The Last Supper fresco, along with several others, and an audio recording to learn more about the artistic process.

Parkway, Trading Post, and Glendale Springs Inn

The Blue Ridge Parkway makes its way directly by the Glendale Springs community. At this point of the scenic road, the mountains often drop precipitously into the Yadkin Valley, and there are several overlooks showcasing the impressive views. The Jumpinoff Rocks overlook is a particularly popular spot to appreciate the long-range mountain views. A short 0.5-mile hike from the overlook brings visitors to a spectacular mountain vista.

Many travelers along the Blue Ridge Parkway make time to visit the Northwest Trading Post at mile-marker 259 in Glendale Springs. Visitors can refresh themselves with food and drinks, and shop for handmade arts and crafts from over 500 artists from 11 North Carolina counties. The Glendale Springs Inn is another unique space in the area. The building was originally constructed in 1895 and expanded in 1902. It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979. The historic and elegant building has had many uses over the years including a general merchandise store, private home, US Post Office, and even a courthouse.
