Jefferson was among the first towns in the nation to bear the name of Thomas Jefferson. This town was purchased in 1799 by the North Carolina General Assembly in order to create a seat for Ashe County. Jefferson is located atop the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains in the Northwestern corner of North Carolina. Within the fifty acres that Jefferson encompasses is the ancient New River, North Carolina’s oldest and most picturesque watercourse.
