Another phase of West Jefferson's beautification program is almost completed - it's nice to see the charming street lights decorating our sidewalks while eliminating some overhead power lines. The traffic lights at the square will be another phase at a later date - which will eliminate all overhead power along the "arts district" in West Jefferson. The first phase began in 1994, and since that time - West Jefferson has made major accomplishments in the revitalization of downtown.
We would be remiss if we did not mention Carol Dodson who spearheaded many of the downtown projects. Carol is the owner of "Tis the Season" and was among one of the first to purchase and revitalize an unoccupied downtown building and bring it back to life. She has her shop "Tis the Season" in one end of the building while "Sally May's Emporium" occupies the remainder. When you are in West Jefferson stop in and say hello to Carol and Karen. The shops are charming and have something for everyone.

You can say you saw it first - another Steve Willingham project - the tanks at the Cheese Plant now will become black and white cows. How MOO is this?

The Ashe County Arts Council's sponsored "Gallery Crawls" in downstown West Jefferson will begin this year at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 10 continuing every second Friday evening through October 14. These events are well attended with art lovers strolling through West Jefferson's "arts district" visiting the participating art galleries, listening to the strolling musicians and viewing the many street murals adorning the walls along the way. Dinner downtown is always an option. The event is free.
One of the participating galleries is "Artist Theatre" owners - Steve and Lisa Willingham. Williamham's art will be available as well as Tonya Bottomley and others. Each gallery will have a variety of paintings, pottery, handmade baskets, wood turned art, handmade jewelry, art glass and many more interesting handcrafted items.
We have a new WebCam for those who want to check the weather downtown or take a look at what is happening on main street.
The location of the camera will be moved each week or (when we think about it again) to show different views of the town. After installing the camera, we realized there is a SMUDGE on the camera lens and wouldn't you know it...it is centered on the mural. YIKES! We are waiting for someone to clean the camera lens - but this may take a few days as we are on mountain time. :) We wanted to include our new webcam in our newsletter...so here it is - smudge and all!
