This tract boasts the mouth of Helton Creek. Helton Creek, one of Ashe County's most famous delayed-harvest trout streams, is stocked with Brook Trout, Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout. You can try your hand at fly fishing or sit by the dam as the water rushes through.

Under delayed-harvest regulations, no fish can be harvested or possessed from these waters between October 1, 2007 and one half hour after sunset on June 1, 2008. No natural bait is allowed and anglers can fish only with single-hook, artificial lures.

Many years ago, the manufacture of iron was an important industry in Ashe County and was one of the cornerstones of the Industrial Revolution. As the county developed, iron products were in great demand. With Helton Creek as its iron-making center, Ashe County's 6 or 7 forges turned out sufficient iron for local needs and provided a surplus to ship by wagon to Fayetteville and other Eastern points in North Carolina as well as Richmond, Virginia and Charleston, South Carolina. Somewhere in the mid 1800's, John Rice Ballou set up a forge on this tract just above the mouth of Helton Creek. The site of this forge would later be the site of Ballou's Grist Mill. Although the mill was washed away in a flood in the 1970's, the dam still remains as a reminder of the importance that Helton Creek has played in the history of Ashe County.
