Is He Dead? at the Ashe County Little Theatre

  • Is He Dead? at the Ashe County Little Theatre

Calling all theatre lovers! On March 29th – 31st, the Ashe County Little Theatre - located at the Ashe County Civic Center in West Jefferson - will present the play Is He Dead?

Written by the legendary American author Mark Twain in 1898, Is He Dead? was first published in print in 2003, after Twain scholar Shelley Fisher discovered the manuscript in the archives of the Mark Twain Papers at the University of California at Berkley. The play was later adapted by the playwright David Ives and premiered on Broadway in 2007.

With classic Twain humor, Is He Dead? follows Jean-Francois Millet, a young painter of genius, in love with Marie Leroux, but in debt to the villainous picture-dealer, Bastien Andre. Andre foreclosures on Millet, threatening debtor’s prison unless Marie marries him. Millet realizes that the only way he can pay his debts and keep Marie from marrying Andre is to die, as it is only dead painters who achieve fame and fortune. Millet fakes his death and prospers, all while passing himself off as his own sister, the Widow Tillou. Now a rich “widow”, he must find a way to get out of a dress, return to life and marry Marie. The production is being directed by Ben Thomas-Reid and produced by Rebecca Williams.

If you’ve never been to a production at the Ashe County Little Theater, you’re in for a treat!. Since 1972 the theatre has produced three to four plays a year. Is He Dead?” will be the first of four productions slated to take place during the 2019 season.
