Renowned Nature Photographer Joshua White Exhibit at Ashe County Library

  • Renowned Nature Photographer Joshua White Exhibit at Ashe County Library

Throughout the month of August, renowned photographer, Joshua White of West Jefferson, will feature his ongoing project, "A Photographic Survey of the American Yard," in the upstairs gallery of the Ashe County Public Library. This photo series of plants, insects and animals highlights the biodiversity of backyards and has been featured in "Proof: National Geographic’s Online Photography Journal," "Scientific American," and "Mother Nature Network."

White, who teaches photography at Appalachian State University in Boone, uses his iPhone to take and edit the photographs. His artistic process relies on using a piece of white foam core as his background, which he places in shade. Then he places the object he is shooting-a bug or a leaf, for instance-- on a knitting needle. Once the image is shot, White opens it in iPhoto on his iPhone, crops if necessary and makes the background pure white. Then he exports the photo to Snapseed, where he converts the image to black and white, then adjusts the exposure. Finally, he uploads the picture to Instagram, where he applies the Earlybird filter. The resulting work is quite beautiful and reflects White’s lifelong fascination with nature. For more on Joshua White’s work, visit his website: http://www.joshuawhitephotography.com.
