Todd Mercantile Monthly Community Potluck Dinner and Old Time Dance

Every month, the Todd Mercantile, “the Friendliest little store in Todd,” hosts its CommUnity Potluck and Dinner and Old Time Dance. The next one will take place on August 18th.

The festivities kick off at 6pm with the potluck! Bring a dish to share and something to drink (or you can get something from the Merc).

After dinner, the tables and chairs will be moved aside in order to begin the “feet tappin' and doing a little do-si-do-ing” to the tunes of our live band. Live callers and music provided by the ever changing and versatile Lauren Creek String Band led by Cecil Gurganus.

About historic downtown Todd:

This unincorporated community straddling the county lines of Watauga and Ashe counties in northwestern North Carolina on the south fork of the New River. Todd’s heyday came in the early 20th century with the timber boom. In 1910, the Carolina-Virginia Railway announced the company would extend tracks from West Jefferson to Elk X Roads. The train was known as the “Virginia Creeper” because of its slow but steady ascent of the steep grades.

At the peak of the boom, Todd boasted two doctors, a dentist, one bank, seven stores, three mills and two hotels. The community was incorporated in 1915 and had a mayor, council and a town marshal.

Todd retains its small Appalachian town charm today. Besides music and dancing, you can find Appalachian arts and crafts for sale at the Todd Mercantile.
