As the days grow shorter and the nights get longer, we start to transition from summer into fall. Here are some of our favorite autumn activities in Ashe County that you should check out before the leaves all fall from the trees and the Christmas tree season begins.

Take a Hike in Ashe County

Fall is the perfect time to hit the trails in the North Carolina Mountains. Each region of the High Country has something special to offer when it comes to experiencing the beauty of nature up close and personal. Just to name a few that are in Ashe County that we recommend for hiking

Mount Jefferson State Park

Mt. Jefferson State Natural Area overlooks the town of West Jefferson. There are overlooks that onto the surrounding landscape and long-range views as far as the eyes can see into Tennessee and Virginia. There are hiking trails and a picnic area. Information on the Park found here.

Pond Mountain – Blue Ridge Conservative

Pond Mountain is one of the most beautiful areas in the High Country, and only a 30-minute drive from West Jefferson. Protected by Blue Ridge Conservative and rising 5,000 feet above sea level the 2,900 acres of open spaces of huge meadows provide excellent hiking and horseback riding. New River Early Morning Journey in late September

It is not too late in the season to take an all-day canoe ride down the famed New River in Ashe County. The air is crisp in early morning and if it is incredibly early, you can observe the golden harvest moon as it disappears below the horizon. Stop in one of the New River Parks for a picnic lunch, then a short hike. Continue your journey on the New River until early evening and observe the sunsets that are so brilliant in the month of September.

Old Barn Winery

Located just out of West Jefferson is Old Barn Winery. Spend an afternoon on the farm enjoying the country surroundings, fine wine, and music. You will be pleasantly surprised by all this farm has to offer. Be sure to visit their website for the event listings.

Apple Picking in late September

Ashe County located in the heart of North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains, making it the perfect place to go apple picking! This is one of the best times to visit one of these orchards to pick apples because they are in season during this month. Be expecting to see rows upon rows of apple trees, ready to pick. You can either bring your own bags or purchase them for a small fee at the orchard.

On the Streets in West Jefferson, NC

After you have spent several days in nature, head on to the most talked about small town in the North Carolina Mountains, West Jefferson. Celebrated for the arts, this small town has an arts district, public art including a mural trail of local scenes, the Virginia Creeper trains of long ago, and numerous art galleries.

In the Fresh, crisp air with remnants of summer and hints of fall, fresh new fall clothing options to freshen up the wardrobe. There is an abundance of new styles of clothing for sale in the shops in West Jefferson. Three of our favorite places to shop are Pam’s Boutique, Becky N Company on Jefferson Avenue and Madi’s Clothing and Accessories on East 2nd. Street.

A journey around West Jefferson will be enjoying as there are many art galleries, antique shops, and unique shops not found elsewhere. Many shops feature items made by the local community.

If you are a cheese connoisseur, you must visit the Ashe County Cheese Plant where you can purchase a large variety of cheeses freshly made. You can also observe cheese making if your visit coincides with their schedule.

Restaurants, Coffee Shops and Craft Beer Brewing

Everyone must eat, and in West Jefferson there are many eateries with a variety of choices that is too numerous to mention.

If you like craft beer, Boondocks Brewing – Brew Hous on S. Jefferson Avenue and New River Brewing on 3rd. Avenue are both in the town limits of West Jefferson.

Check out the Backstreet Park for concerts that may be happening on a Friday evening or a gallery crawl featuring local arts.

Ashe County Farmer’s Market

West Jefferson’s Backstreet will begin to offer pumpkins, pears, apples, figs, potatoes and all the autumn produce we have been waiting patiently for. The Farmer’s Market also offers fall flowers, handmade crafts, jellies, and jams freshly made by the local folks in and around Ashe County.

History of West Jefferson, North Carolina The people of Ashe County and West Jefferson often hold deep ties to the area’s history. There is a sense of magnificence when entering the mountains of north western North Carolina – possibly looking back to the sense of wonder the first explorers felt as they ventured into the Blue Ridge Mountain’s immense beauty for the first time. Colonel Ben Cleveland, Revolutionary War hero particularly known for his leadership at the Battle of King’s Mountain, was the first settler to own land where West Jefferson now stands. History tells us, Ben Cleveland received the large tract of Appalachian mountain land, including what is now Ashe County, in 1795.

Visit the Farmers Market in West Jefferson There are many reasons to shop local at the Ashe County Farmers Market. Choosing our local farmers market means stimulating the economy of northwestern North Carolina. It also means fresher food as food is gown locally instead of transported hundreds – sometimes even thousands of miles. When you shop at the Ashe County Farmers Market you will find fresh vegetables, there is seasonal produce, local honey, free-range eggs, maple syrup, jams, and freshly baked breads and pastries. Local all-natural beef, chicken, pork, and lamb as well as (occasionally) fresh mountain trout are also available in a wide variety of cuts and sizes. In addition to fruits, meats, and vegetables the Ashe County Farmers Market features the works from talented local artisans including hand-woven baskets, pottery, candles, quilts, and soaps. Fine wood crafts are also available for sale: one-of-kind cutting boards, bird houses, furniture, and boutique picture frames just to name a few. Discovering Bluff Mountain Perserve Ashe County NC

Bluff Mountain is in Ashe County, North Carolina, the picturesque corner of the North Carolina Mountains Hiking Bluff Mountain Preserve offers a remarkable journey through breathtaking landscapes, unique landforms, and an extraordinary variety of plant life. Bluff Mountain stands as one of the most ecologically significant natural areas in the entire Southeast. Its rich geological structure and diverse ecosystems make it a haven for both rare and endangered species, as well as a sanctuary for nature enthusiasts looking to immerse themselves in the wonders of the natural world. How Bluff Mountain Became a Preserve In 1978, the North Carolina Chapter of The Nature Conservancy began working in collaboration with the owners of Bluff Mountain, Wyn Edwards and Mac Edwards, families of West Jefferson. They had a common goal of protecting the area’s ecosystem, which resulted in the North Carolina Chapter of the Nature Conservation buying 701 acres of the Bluff. Today, the Bluff Mountain Preserve encompasses more than 3,800 acres which are carefully managed to secure the continued protection of the extremely rare natural area.

Paddy Mountain West Jefferson NC

The recent purchase of 152-acres on Paddy Mountain in Ashe County by Blue Ridge Conservancy is a significant achievement in land preservation. In this article, we will take a closer look at the significance of Paddy Mountain, its conservation efforts, and the Northern Peaks State trail. The trail will connect Boone to Elk Knob State Park, West Jefferson, and Mount Jefferson State Natural Area. More importantly, the mountain with its stunning landscapes and rich biodiversity will be permanently protected from development. Ecological Significance Paddy Mountain is part of the ecologically rich Amphibolite Mountains, which are home to a wide range of plant and animal species. The mountain's eastern slope is known for its unique and diverse habitats. In collaboration with the NC Plant Conservation Program, the Blue Ridge Conservancy has been actively working to manage and protect the delicate ecosystems found on Paddy Mountain.
