Blue Ridge Brutal on August 11th

The Brutal is one of the premiere mountain rides in this area and is not for the fainthearted. The three options – 56-mile, 72-mile and 102-mile rides take you onto the Blue Ridge Parkway and over many hills. All these rides can be considered challenging to strenuous. However, you can mix the pain with the joy of riding through some of the most beautiful scenery in North Carolina which, we believe, makes these rides some of the most spectacular in this area. This ride tours Ashe and Alleghany counties and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Beginning and ending in front of the Ashe Civic Center, in the shadow of Mount Jefferson, the ride offers varied and challenging terrain.

The Brutal was started as a fundraiser for the Ashe Civic Center in 1990 and continues to use the proceeds to support community and school arts programming to benefit the surrounding area. Riders will be supported by the Ashe County Amateur Radio Club, Rescue Squads from all over the county, and SAG wagons. Riders will receive a hot meal, t-shirt, and support of many volunteers!

Assault on Mt. Jefferson: Entry for this additional 3.4 mile challenge is limited to only 80 riders and is not for the faint hearted. The elevation gain is almost 1,476 feet which, although never classified, makes this ride very comparable to a Category 2 climb. Those who attempt this at the end of completing their main ride will be provided transport back to the Finish point. Riders are not permitted to cycle back down.
