Where to Hike in Ashe County

One of the best ways to discover the unique beauty of Ashe County during the summer season is to get outside and take a hike! Here are some of our top picks:

Check out New River State Park located near Jefferson, North Carolina, where you can choose from several lovely hiking trails including the Spur Trail, Farmhouse Loop Trail, Fern Nature Trail, Running Cedar Trail, and the Hickory Trail. For more info: http://www.ncparks.gov/new-river-state-park

Mount Jefferson, a natural landmark, is another favorite hiking spot. If you are up for a strenuous hike, take the Summit Trail to the top of Mount Jefferson at 4,665 feet, the highest point in Ashe County. You’ll be rewarded with magnificent views of the Appalachian Mountains as well as of Ashe County.

The famed Blue Ridge Parkway also runs through Ashe County. Known for its spectacular mountain views, waterfalls, rolling pastures, and vibrant wildflowers, you can also explore this wilderness area by foot. The hiking trails off of the Blue Ridge Parkway are well marked and include the Jumping Off Rock Trail (Milepost 260.3), Thompkins Knob Trail (Milepost 272.5), and the Lump Trail (Milepost 264.4). Mount Jefferson is not the highest peak in Ashe, Peak Mountain is. 3 top mountain is also much taller.
