Virginia Log Home

The typical log home will be akin to a gentleman’s farm and will offer beautiful rolling pastures, native hardwoods, conifers, clear mountain streams or ponds and views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. This area has long been suitable for horse farms; however, in the past several years’ people have discovered the area is the perfect environment for raising llamas and alpacas.  Therefore, many log homes have barns and outbuildings already on the property. There are many log homes for sale in Virginia and Ashe High Country Realty can find one that meets your real estate requirements.

The average temperature in the area is 82 degrees in July and 22 degrees in January. The summers are cool on the average and in winter, you get just enough snow to know that winter has arrived.  The crime rate is exceptionally low – the total national crime risk index – with 100 being the highest benchmark – Grayson County’s total crime rate is only 16.

The Appalachian foothills of Southwestern Virginia are an exceptional place to live if you enjoy nature and a laid-back lifestyle. It is the birthplace of bluegrass music and has approximately 30 miles of the famed Virginia Heritage Music Trail, (The Crooked Road) winding through Grayson County.

You can spend days exploring Jefferson Natural Forest, but first you would want to begin in Grayson Highlands State Park.  Located in Grayson County, on the southwest border of Mt. Rogers National Recreation Park, is Grayson Highlands State Park.  The park encompasses 4,822 acres with elevations from 3,698 feet at the entrance to the park up to 5,089 at the summit.  From the park, there is access to Mt. Rogers, Jefferson National Forest, and Appalachian Trail.

The park offers campgrounds, an amphitheater, access to 67 horse trails, freshwater fishing, playgrounds, mountain biking trails, rock climbing, hiking trails, stables with covered stalls, picnic shelters, cool crystal clear mountain streams and swimming holes, in addition to an information and welcome center.  This park is known as one of the best for camping, backpacking and rock climbing in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  It is worth the drive just to see the wild ponies and horses that roam freely throughout the park‘s high meadows and balds.

It is only fitting that Grayson County’s park contains an amphitheater, featuring mostly bluegrass and folk music.  It is home to renowned local guitar maker and musician, Wayne Henderson.  The Wayne Henderson Festival and Guitar Competition are an annual event, as well as the annual Grayson Highlands Fall Festival, a bluegrass music event.  There are also weekly “picking and singing” get-to-gathers by area musicians, more casual, laid back events whose folk and bluegrass music resonate throughout the park.  The park‘s entrance is located on Highway 58, in Grayson County, Virginia between Independence and Damascus, Virginia.

Grayson County is a sanctuary for nature lovers as well as a naturalist’s paradise.  With low taxes, low crime, the four seasons and a serene lifestyle, why not consider this location for your Virginia log home.
