Outdoor Activities in NC Mountain High Country

In the summer there are many reasons to visit Ashe County and the mountains of Northwestern North Carolina. Hiking among the wildflowers in the spring, cooling off by the New River on a warm summer day or taking a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway as the autumn leaves begin to change.

But what is there to do in the winter?

When winter comes along, residents in Ashe County and the surrounding area have access to some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the Southeastern United States. The winter of 2020/2021 has brought cool weather and natural snowfall, so conditions on the slopes are perfect for a day of skiing, snowboarding, or tubing.

Appalachian Ski Mountain

App Ski Mountain, as it is known by many, is a wonderful place to learn to ski or snowboarding. Appalachian Ski Mountain is renowned across the southeast for its French-Swiss Ski College.

Founded in the winter of 1968-1969, the ski college has supplied instruction for countless new skiers – allowing them to enjoy the sport for a lifetime. “Safety, Fun, Learning, and Practice” is its motto, and you are sure to have a wonderful time at App Ski Mountain no matter your ability. If skiing or snowboarding is not your thing, there’s ice skating available as well.

Appalachian Ski Mountain is only 45 minutes from West Jefferson.

Sugar Mountain Resort

Sugar Mountain is another popular place to get outside and enjoy the snow during the winter months. The resort boasts 125 skiable acres, and 1,200 vertical feet of elevation – the most in North Carolina! There are options for beginners, experts, and everything in between at Sugar Mountain, and it is less than an hour’s drive from West Jefferson.

Sugar Mountain also has options for tubing, so there is more than one way to have a blast on the slopes.

Beech Mountain Resort

Topping out at 5,506 feet, Beech Mountain is the highest ski resort in the eastern United States.

There are 95 acres of skiable terrain at Beech Mountain, accessed by 17 separate runs. The resort also has options for tubing and ice skating.

Want to take a break from the activities? Then take your break where outdoor seating is available at Beech Mountain Sky Bar on Beech Mountain’s summit. From the summit enjoy panoramic views of the North Carolina and Tennessee Mountains.
