The 12th Annual High Country Ice Bowl

On Saturday, February 10th, folks will be “freezing for a reason” at the Ashe County Park Disc Golf Course in Jefferson.

Presented by the Ashe County Parks & Recreation and the High Country Disc Golf Club, the “Ice Bowl™” is a disc golf event held in winter to increase local awareness of disc golf by raising charitable funds to combat hunger.

Built in 2006 and featuring one of the highest elevation drops and placements of the 1,500 courses in the country, the Ashe County course was designed by Harold Duvall of the Innova Disc Golf Company.

Disc golf players stand at a tee and fling a disc toward a “hole,” an elevated metal basket outfitted with a set of chains to catch the disc. The discs come in mass varieties, but are typically smaller and heavier than a traditional Frisbee. Like traditional golf, disc golf includes numerous trees, rocks and other hazards that must be avoided.

The goal of the 12th Annual High Country Ice Bowl is to raise money for Ashe Outreach. Ashe Outreach started in 2005 and initially focused on middle grades children. Since then they have developed several specialized and focused programs. Over 25,000 lbs. of food is administered every month through five of their programs including: Mobile Meals, a food pantry, weekly community meals, and a School Backpack program. Outgrow Hunger, their newest program focuses on helping locals become informed about agricultural practices and utilizing locally-grown fresh produce to eliminate hunger. For more on Ashe Outreach, visit:
