Upcoming Programs at New River State Park

  • Upcoming Programs at New River State Park

One of Ashe County’s natural treasures, the New River was named a National Wild and Scenic River in 1976 and it wildly winds through some of the best North Carolina mountain scenery. New River State Park is base camp for exploration of this river at two principal spots—Wagoner Road Access and US 221 Access.

New River State Park offers a variety of learning opportunities for all ages. Typically led by park rangers, these interpretive programs allow the public to gain perspective into what makes North Carolina state parks naturally wonderful.

Check out these upcoming events:

Animal Signs:
We may not always see the animals that live around us but we can see the signs they leave behind. Tracks, nests, holes and scat are all signs that we can learn to match up to our outside neighbors. Join a park ranger for a short presentation and then a 1-mile hike looking for and interpreting animal signs to identify the animals that live in New River State Park.

When: Saturday, December 15, 2018
Time: 1:00pm
Where: Meet at the Wagoner Access Office

Weeds in Winter:
Summer and Fall flowers can still be seen during Winter. They just look a little different. Learn how to identify you favorite wildflowers after the bloom is gone. Once you are able to identify the dried stalks of the once colorful flowers, you may agree that there are no weeds in Winter and imagine  only the promise of color next Spring.

Meet at New River State Park's Wagoner Access Office for a short presentation and a 1-mile easy hike.

When: Sunday, December 16, 2018
Time: 1:00pm
Where: Wagoner Access Office

Take a First Hike!
Start the New Year with some fresh air! Join one of the many "first hikes" in a beautiful North Carolina State Park. Join a park ranger for an informal hike down the Hickory Trail. We will begin at the Park's Visitor Center for a 1.5-mile moderate hike to the river and back to the Visitor Center.  Wear Sturdy shoes and bring water.
