West Jefferson, NC has a new Website

The street murals in downtown West Jefferson not only showcase the artistic talent found in our area, they tell a story of our history, our culture and the beauty of Ashe County.

This mural tells of our history, when the "mighty" Virginia Creeper made a daily trip from Abingdon, Virginia through West Jefferson to Todd. In later years, when Todd was no longer the viable timber source it once was, the train only came to West Jefferson. In 1977, when it became evident that the train could no longer be profitable, the company closed.

This mural shows a simpler day and time, "The Cut at Devil Stairs" by local artist Stephen Shoemaker.
