Deep Gap Real Estate

The Deep Gap area is a special treasure because you can find a home with a breathtaking ridgetop view, or a secluded valley property next to a tranquil mountain stream. Without taking away from the picturesque scenery, some of our properties around Deep Gap allow options for living at slightly lower elevation, making for milder winters and generally less frozen precipitation.

The unincorporated town of Deep Gap is named for a prominent “V” in the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains. On a clear day, Deep Gap can be seen from well into the piedmont of North Carolina. The low-point provides a practical passage in the otherwise formidable Blue Ridge escarpment, and has been used as the obvious route through the mountains since the Cherokee Native Americans inhabited the area. The legendary explorer Daniel Boone used Deep Gap as a passageway as well, spending a good portion of his life in and around the area. Today, US Highway 421 takes advantage of the natural gap to bring travelers into the scenic mountains of North Carolina from the piedmont.

The iconic Blue Ridge Parkway passes directly over Deep Gap. From where it intersects US Highway 421, visitors can travel north towards E.B. Jeffress Park and the Cascades waterfalls, or south towards Blowing Rock and the towering Grandfather Mountain. There are numerous overlooks and hiking opportunities along this section of the Parkway, making for a great area to explore or picnic while enjoying the natural beauty of northwestern North Carolina.

Incredible views aren’t the only reason Deep Gap is a special place. Arguably one of the most influential folk and bluegrass musicians of all time, the late Doc Watson called Deep Gap home. If you’ve ever turned on a country music station and listened to more than a couple songs, you’ve probably heard artists who were influenced by Doc Watson’s work. Doc’s talents were especially impressive because he was blinded as a child due to an eye infection. He learned to play guitar by feeling the frets and listening to the notes. Despite of, or potently because of this setback, Doc developed an exceptionally unique style of picking the guitar. During his career, Doc was inducted into the International Bluegrass Hall of Honor, the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, and received the National Medal of Arts from the President of the United States.

Deep Gap is also near another part of Doc Watson’s legacy: the renowned MerleFest music festival in Wilkesboro. The music festival was started in 1988 in memory of Doc’s son, Merle Watson, who had tragically passed away in a tractor accident. MerleFest attracts visitors from around the world to listen to an eclectic blend of country, folk, americana, and bluegrass music. The yearly music festival is held the last weekend of April on the campus of Wilkes Community College, only about 30 minutes from Deep Gap.
