Jefferson, North Carolina

As North Carolina Governor Charles B. Aycock said in 1900, “Ashe County is the best County in the State.” Over 100 years later, many residents would still agree with the Governor’s sentiment.

The town of Jefferson takes the honor of serving as the seat of “the best County in the State,” meaning it is the centralized location for county government, health care, and social services for the 25,000 residents in the area. Jefferson was also one of the first towns in the nation to bear the name of Thomas Jefferson, who was seeking presidency at the time the town was named. It was officially chartered by the NC General Assembly in 1803. For an extended period of time Jefferson was the most bustling “cities” west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, until the railroad extended further west into the state.

Today, visitors and locals alike will be greeted by authentic southern hospitality and friendly faces when strolling main street in the quaint mountain town of Jefferson. It is the perfect community for those looking to relocate, retire, or to purchase a second vacation home in the scenic mountains of North Carolina. Get a taste for the rich history of Jefferson and the surrounding area at the Ashe County History Museum, or stop by for a delicious bite to eat at one of multiple small-town restaurants. Even indulge in some ice-cream one block from main street!

Jefferson also has multiple world-class recreational opportunities within a short drive from town. The ironically named New River, the oldest river in the United States and the second oldest in the world, flows within Jefferson’s fifty acres. The New River is widely regarded as one of the most picturesque waterways in the nation. Multiple access points are located nearby offering convenient opportunities for fishing, canoeing, or simply enjoying a tranquil afternoon watching the pure water amble its way towards Virginia. Ashe County is known for its clear mountain water, even to the extent of possessing healing capabilities for some.

The iconic Blue Ridge Parkway is also a short drive from the town of Jefferson. The Parkway follows the crest of the Blue Ridge and offers endless breathtaking views of rugged Appalachian peaks and pristine mountain farm land. From milepost 255 to 275, Ashe County boasts 20 of the Parkway’s 469 total miles. Multiple short hiking trails and overlooks are adjacent to the Blue Ridge Parkway, making for a perfect Sunday afternoon drive or picnic destination.
