One of Ashe County’s most iconic attractions, the Blowing Rock is a huge cliff 4,000 feet above sea level, overhanging Johns River Gorge that lies 3,000 feet below. If you are unfamiliar with this natural landmark, “The Blowing Rock,” gets its name because the rocky walls of the gorge form a flume through which the wind sweeps upward. This current of air inspired a Ripley’s “Believe-It-Or-Not” cartoon about the Rock that is captioned, “The only place in the world where snow falls upside down.” Not only is the Rock itself an interesting natural wonder, but the site also offers gorgeous panoramic mountain views.

If you have not seen it already, there’s still time to experience this year’s production of “Horn In The West,” America’s oldest Revolutionary War drama, which runs through August 6th. The show takes place at the Daniel Boone Amphitheatr, renowned as one of the country’s most beautiful outdoor theatres.

Ashe County Cheese is not only the largest cheese manufacturer in North Carolina but it is also the state’s oldest, operating since 1930. Located in West Jefferson, the Ashe County Cheese plant is a fun spot to visit during the summer or any time throughout the year, to witness the fine art of cheese making.
