Lecture and film series: Blurred Boundaries: The Experience of War and Its Aftermath

In need of a little intellectual stimulation? Here’s a way to learn about the Civil War experience in Appalachia and also understand the experiences of veterans who participated in Vietnam.

As part of its Dialogues on the Experience of War grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Appalachian State University in Boone invites you to join in discussions on novels, films and memoir about the Civil War in Appalachia and experiences of veterans in Vietnam. Participants will receive free copies of books discussed. The project, Blurred Boundaries; The Experience of War and Its Aftermath, is a project located in Boone, North Carolina that organizes and supports discussions between veterans, family members, and the community on stories about the human experience of war.

Discussions explore ways in which clear boundaries between home and alien territory, friend and enemy, and right and wrong often become blurred during war. These discussions draw from participants’ experiences as well as novels, memoirs, photographs, and films about two wars: The Civil War and Vietnam War.

The project is supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of the Dialogues on the Experience of War initiative and works in collaboration with the Appalachian Veterans Arts and Humanities Collective at ASU.
