What is a BArn Quilt?
barn Quilt blocks are hung on the exterior of a barn, house, garage or other building. The majority of barn quilts are comprised of simple geometric shapes, like squares, rectangles and triangles. They usually are painted in solid colors, though every now and then, you’ll come across one that has been painted to look like printed fabric. The simplicity in shape and the vibrancy of solid colors make these blocks easily seen from afar. If they are too complicated, the details can be lost. Just as fabric quilts have their own unique story, so do barn quilts. While barns were not painted back in the day, they were decorated with different types of folk art. This included quilt blocks once paint was readily available and affordable. People chose certain blocks to reflect particular meanings.
Here is an opportunity to make your own Quilt Barn Squares and celebrate an important tradition in Ashe County and throughout the United States.
4x4 Quilt Barn Square Workshop
New River Escape presents this intermediate course; blocks will be encouraged to be fairly basic in format. Blocks will be 3’x3’ or 4’x4’in size, primed and waiting for you. Exterior paints (primary colors), brushes and design supplies will be provided. Designs must be submitted in advance. Instructions, tips and guidance on making a gorgeous quilt block will be given by Ginny Schaum, chair of Schoharie County Quilt Barn Trail, NY. She has created/installed 100 quilt blocks.
Please bring your own blow-dryer to help with speed of paint drying. (Add $25/block for design to be drawn and ready to paint upon arrival) Snacks will be provided.
